WITH a spectacular second race win, Andrew Morgan staked a strong claim
as the new king of the South Dakota Circuit, beating reigning champion
Mark Vieira for the Group 3 title, in the second National motor racing
meet at the Timehri racing venue, yesterday. But Rupie Shewjattan was
the unbeaten racer, capturing all three Group 2B (fast) races, to be
crowned the day’s champion.
The first Group 3 race ended in the traditional way - Vieira first and
Andrew King second, with Morgan third. Racers had to pull their grid
positions from a bag and the champion was at the back, worked his way
through the crowd to claim the checkered flag. But in the second race,
Morgan zoomed to the front, going into the clubhouse turn leading, and
he never looked back. Vieira challenged him on the back straight in the
sixth lap to close in. Then in the second turn in the following lap,
Vieira reached the turn on the inside to take over the lead but slowed
up, coming out. Both Morgan and King passed Vieira, who caught up with
King before the goose neck and a strong tussle ensued, which led to both
racers running off in the goose neck and out of the race. Morgan
comfortably won the race, brother Peter Morgan in his new Ford Escort
was second and Shawn King third.
Vieira told Chronicle Sport that a
fuel injection system was installed in the car and the time was too
short for the mechanic team to get it right. To compound the day’s
difficulties he lost the third gear in the last lap of the first race
and had to be running on second and fourth. He went fast into the turns
and could not keep up in the straights. “But it offered good
entertainment at my expense. However, Andrew did a very, very good job.
All the best to him.” A third race was hastily put together without
Vieira, which Morgan won to claim the Group 3 crown, Andrew King was
second and Shawn King third.
Another spill occurred with the second go kart race, involving four
machines coming out of the goose neck. The race was abandoned after the
collision. Seventeen-year-old Kristian Jeffrey won the first race, in a
case of son ruling father, with Kevin Jeffrey placing second.
Joe Mohan in a Toyota Levin won
the first Group 2A (slow) race, with John Joseph in a Honda Civic second
and Vishal Sawh in a Starlet third. Joseph claimed the second race,
ahead of Eric Tucker, repeating the finish for the third race. Joseph
was also second to Shewjattan in the last two Group 2B races, with
Mohamed Roshandin placing second in the first outing and Kamal Seebarran
third. Marcel Profitt, Rose Ramdehol and Rameez Mohamed shared the top
slot in the three Group 1 (Novices) races. Stephen Vieira was first in
the lone 125cc motorcycle race.
