Drags  By Isaiah Chappelle
AN unfancied Toyota Starlet four-door car emerged the star of the year’s first drag racing meet at the South Dakota circuit, Sunday. The modified 2000 cc machine nick-named “Matchbox” beat off the flashiest Mitsubishi Evolution 4 nick-named “Ruff Stuff” to take the Overall champion prize. Vivek "Billy" Joshi firstly drove the white “Matchbox” to the top prize in the 2000 Turbo category, with Neville Codette in the pink “Ruff Stuff” finishing second in the final. It so happened the two cars were the fastest for the day, so the result was, also, used to declare the Overall winner. They are now the fastest street car, until another drag meet.

The 1600 cc top prize went to Henry Rambarran in a Toyota Starlet two-door car, beating off Aaron Bethune in a Toyota Corolla with PEE series, in the final. Suren Griffith in another Toyota of PGG series, out ran Awad Boodhoo in a Honda of PJJ series in the final of Miscellaneous category. The Modified Starlet category winner was Ravindra Samaroo who beat Afraz Allie in the final. In the Big Bike category, Gregory Lopes on a Suzuki 1000 cc outpowered Errol Gonsalves on a Ducati in a close finish, while Rovin Sookraj beat off Jai Singh in the Small Bike category. The Minibus category prize went to Leroy Forde driving Route 44 bus named “Federation” in BHH series, beating another Route 44 bus named “Money & Girls” twice. A large turnout witnessed some very competitive races, sending some spectators jumping with excitement when their favourite car won.

The Mitusbishi Evolution battle began with Ray Rahaman in black Evolution 2 against Terry “Bull Dog” Singh in a silver Evolution 6. The Evolution 6 again triumphed over “Ruff Stuff”, but Codette won when it mattered in the elimination in the finals. Peter Morgan had an earlier good showing in a blue Subaru, even beating “Ruff Stuff” in one drag. There was much excitement for the clash between Irfan Kalamadeen in a silver super-fast third generation Mazda RX7 and Morgan in his Subaru. The Subaru triumphed. The minibuses created quite a stir, even moreso when one of them dragged against a hire car. The Toyota AT 192 Carina took the chequered flag. All types of cars took to the track, including BMWs, Honda S2000, Toyota Glancer, the regular Toyota Starlets and Corollas.
