A tribute to Stanley Ming – 30 YEARS OF SPEED

Stanley Ming’s romance with speed and racing circuits began when he was just 21years old,  way back in 1972. In March that year he rode a Suzuki 50cc and in his fast time on the South Dakota he managed a 2nd place. Later that year he rode in 4 races and won them all. After that meeting he rode in Barbados and won all 3 races he contested in there at the August Bank Holiday meeting (the first time the GMRC sent motorcyclists overseas).

In early 1973 he switched to a 100cc Yamaha riding at 2 meetings then decided to make a big step – up to a water-cooled 350cc Yamaha factory racer he had ordered. By then he was the Yamaha Sales Representative at Geddes Grant & Co. Ltd. and an Executive Member of the GMRC. The bike did not arrive in time for the November 1973 meeting so he made do with the Ex- David Reid Yamaha TD350 and placed well. The water-cooled 350 finally arrived and he raced that until 1977 with many a memorable against Patrick Tong of team Solo. A trip to Cuba was followed by racing in the UK in 1977 on return to Guyana a trip to Daytona for the Motorcycle Speed- week in 1987 was made.

On the re-start of Motor Racing at Timehri in 1988 he rode Yamahas big and small on the track and grass to 100cc Karts (Yamaha of course) in 1997, re-introducing the sport to Guyanese selling many to eager buyers. The need for more power saw him introducing Yamaha 125cc shifter Karts to Guyana in 2002. The Club Day on Sunday 11th June sees Stanley Ming debut the most frightening (according to David Coulthard) kart ever raced in Guyana, the 250cc Yamaha powered super Kart. Stanley has fallen for karting and says if he’d found out about it earlier in life he would have parked his motorcycle long ago!
