Even a shift in venue
could not prevent the Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club (GMR&SC) from
presenting another ritzy awards ceremony last Monday night in the
Savannah Suite of the Le Meridien Pegasus Hotel. Under the leadership of
President Vishok Persaud, who was well supported by his team, the GMR&SC
produced another high class performance that received many commendations
from both competitors and guests who turned out in their numbers to
witness the daredevils of the sport being awarded for their outstanding
achievements on the track at last Sunday’s International Race Meeting,
at the South Dakota Circuit.
Heading the list of
outstanding performers was Guyana’s Ryan Rahaman, who dominated the
Group 3 and 2B categories, placing first in all six events, while
Barbados’ Stuart Maloney won the champion driver award for the Caribbean
Series.
Apart from competitors,
members and executives of the GMR&SC among the other notable
personalities present were GT&T.s Marketing Executive Wystan Robertson,
Ansa McAl’s Marketing Manager Annyeta Hinds, other sponsors
representatives and special invitees. GT&T’s Robertson in his remarks
spoke of the strong tradition that the club has, referring to their high
standard of achievement both at the level of competition and as
customary their showpiece awards ceremony.
He commended them for pulling off what he described as one of the
largest sporting events to be held in the country recently, referring to
the thousands of spectators and competitors that descended at the South
Dakota Circuit last Sunday. “Motor Racing attracts a large following
from overseas and the GMR&SC has to be applauded for being responsible
for that,” Robertson said.
Robertson, whose Company is among the biggest sponsors of the Meeting
disclosed that because of the growing reputation of the sport across the
Caribbean, they’ve moved up a notch this year in terms of increasing
their support with the inclusion of Andrew King on their sponsorship
roster.
Ansa McAl’s Hinds in her
brief comments said that what she witnessed last Sunday has guaranteed
the Company’s future support for the Club and motor racing, adding that
the GMR&SC must be commended for putting together such a fantastic event
and they are proud to be part of it.
Kem Lall of Team Cams in
his remarks said that the team had a great time on the track and was
eagerly looking forward to next year.
Canadian Kevin Graham,
who copped the Most Outstanding Award for the Superbikes, responding on
behalf of the team stated that it was a pleasure to be back in Guyana
which he referred to as his second home; assuring that anytime they have
the opportunity to be back they certainly will.
“I want to thank my sponsor Sunburst Orange Juice for their continued
support and I must say that they are a wonderful organisation,” Graham
disclosed.
Mark Maloney of Team
Barbados thanked the club for inviting them to participate in the
Meeting, while paying special recognition to Persaud and team for
organizing a wonderful race Meet. The club received many other tributes
from other members of the Caribbean and North American racing fraternity
for a well organised event.
